BLOWN AWAY

People I want to tell you a story

A tale too tragic just to tell

About a boy, grew up in South Louisiana

Whose soul is surely bound for hell

Some say no one every really loved him

Though his Momma tells a tale of a different kind

But one day he woke up with anger in his heart

And killing on his mind

He started with his most recent lover

A young girl, didn’t know what she’d done

Killed her Momma so’s he could get to her

Drug her out and shot her on the lawn

He was on his way down to New Orleans

When finally he was caught by the man

They found him with his smoking gun

And his hit list in his hand

So he sits in a cell in Angola

A cell only six feet wide

Knowing that come judgement day

There’ll be no place for his soul to hide

He begs the man not for mercy

While waitin for his dyin day

Ya see Death will be a way to be free

Cause it’s his soul that was blown away

So mothers tell your children

To live each and every day

Like it was their last one here on earth

So their soul won’t be blown away

Their soul won’t be blown away

Won’t be blown away

I grew up in a small town in south Louisiana. One of the guys I grew up with sits on death row in Angola State Penitentiary. He's been there for almost 15 years. I felt compelled to write this song, but will not play it until he is gone, out of respect for his victims. I wouldn't want him to think I wrote it for him.
